EMPOWER

Historically, the Church was the foundational glue within every African American community. The strength, faith and power of the Church kept the Black community centered on God, united and strong. Church members were committed leaders, educators, Board of Education members, City Council members, entrepreneurs, fireman, casino workers, and nurses advocating for important and relevant issues that adversely impacted the lives of their families and neighbors. My neighbors, friends and relatives were Hispanic and African American; who walked their children to school every day, prepared home-cooked meals, attended church and celebrated their family and culture. I participated in Quinceañeras and developed long-lasting friendships that exist today. My experiences as a child at my family’s church were also very empowering and inspirational.  I learned about Jesus in Sunday School, read the Bible during service including Wednesday evenings for Bible Study and sang uplifting hymns such as Blessed Assurance. My family and church family strongly promoted education-college.  There were many “Report Card Celebrations,” “Youth of the Year” banquets and “Roses in the Wilderness” pageants at church recognizing the talent, academic achievement, success and dedication of young people.  At the tender age of seven years old, I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and knew after graduating high school, I’ll be attending college.

Education is embodied in our Church Doctrine at Promise of Deliverance Ministries.  Our work includes community school districts and the advocacy for all children to receive a thorough, equitable, inclusive and comprehensive education consisting of Amistad, Holocaust and Hispanic Heritage curriculums.  The New Jersey Department of Education has mandated it as educational law. At Promise of Deliverance Ministries, let us all continue to support and advocate for the academic success of all children.

Educationally Yours in Christ,

First Lady Tamar LaSure-Owens
